Bangkok is the capital of the primary city of Thailand. Within its walls lies the Grand Palace, a complex of buildings which served as the official residence of the Kings of Thailand from the 18th century onwards. Construction of the Palace began in 1782. The present king does not reside here but rather at the Chitralada Palace.
